Sakutō Town Black Sashiko Japanese Firefighter Jacket
This cotton hikeshi-banten (fireman jacket) is modeled after Edo era (1603-1867) fireman's uniforms. They would have been soaked in water before fighting a fire. Now they are mostly worn by fire brigade members to events, demonstrations, and festivities.
This jacket dates to mid-late Shōwa era (1926-1989). It was from the town of Sakutō, which no longer exists, as it was dissolved and merged with other towns in 2005.
It features faded black sashiko cotton with a red stripe across the shoulders and two white stripes across the middle. The jacket as a weight to it, but is soft and comfortable to wear. The graphic look is great with jeans and perfect as a Spring & Autumn jacket. Since it is an open jacket, I like to wear mine over a black hoodie.
